Sheldwich is a one form entry primary school, which endeavours to supply all our children with high quality P.E lessons and lasting sporting experiences. For the academic year 2016 – 2017 the school received £ 8925 in School Sport Premium funding money.

As part of the allocation of the sport funding money, we have paid an annual subscription to our local School Sport Partnership - this clearly has sustainability benefits and the children have benefitted from the vast amount of competitions that we are able to access (both inter and intra), specialised coaching, sports leadership support and teacher training as well as subject leader support.

Furthermore, a recent focus over the last few years at Sheldwich, has been to increase the amount of after school sports clubs which are available to the children –We are now able to provide an array of clubs and sporting opportunities across all year groups and key stages throughout the year.

The sustained expansion of our after-school clubs thus increasing the opportunity for our pupils in a range of sports not necessarily accessed through curriculum PE. The quality assured coaches we use, alongside our own school staff, provide opportunities for all pupils to engage in a range of sports..

Sheldwich was awarded the Gold Sports Kitemark for the academic year 2016 - 2017 for the fourth year running. This is an incredible achievement and something all the staff and children should be very proud of-very few schools in the county have achieved this! This award is sponsored by Sainsbury’s and is a nationally recognised award that has been given to Sheldwich Primary school for the on-going commitment that the children, staff and parents show towards sport and offering the children as many opportunities as possible. This award reflects the endless hard work and determination that both children, staff and parents show towards the teaching of physical education, extra-curricular clubs and competing in an array of primary schools’ sports tournaments. This takes account of the increased pupil participation, competitive opportunities and high quality PE provision as well as opportunities in sports leadership etc.

American Football Development taught Year 5 and Year 3 for a six week session, Appeti Tennis taught Year 1 for a term, lacrosse sessions in Year 5 and 6 and squash session in Year 4. Classes also had the opportunity to try handball, rugby and boxercise.

All children in Class 1 – 6 took part in a range of Intra School Level 1 competitions and activities these included athletics, football, tri-golf, gymnastics, netball, orienteering, cross-country and interhouse competitions which included hockey, handball, basketball and tag rugby.

Alongside this was our increased entry into the Level 2 competitions entering 32 teams into a range of competitions including: athletics, netball, handball, basketball, dodgeball, cricket, football, tag rugby, infant multi-skills, badminton, cross country and rounders. We performed exceptionally well, four 1st places, five 2nd places and two 3rd places. The Year 6 Handball team went on to represent Canterbury district at the Kent School Games Finals.

Increased range of clubs available –Year 3 and 4 Tennis club and Gymnastics were new this year.
